Belgian cyclo-cross champion Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) took second place at the Superprestige Gavere, in Belgium on Sunday.
Nys’s chances of victory crumbed on the penultimate lap of the race as he suffered a rear wheel puncture. His bad luck opened the door for rival Niels Albert to ride solo to the line, 36 seconds ahead of Nys.
“I was thinking about a win during the race but one minute later I punctured my tyre because of a stone,” said Nys. “Before that, I had hopes of trying something in the last lap, but after that setback, I knew it was over.
Niels is the deserving winner and next week, there’s another race.

The
Fidea Jaarmarktcross was the site of a fantastic battle yesterday,as
Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) and Niels Albert fought for every inch of the course. Nys took the victory, narrowly out-sprinting Albert at the line.
Albert was the first one to reach the top of the Rupeldijk but this time he could not shake off Nys. Both champions would battle it out in the sprint. Albert went frst, but could not hold off a raging Nys who won with 1:00:05 time.
“Everything is working well at the moment,” Nys said. “Every weekend I have finished on the podium. There were a few races where I thought I could win and it didn’t happen, but my condition is really good.”
“The next race - on Sunday in Gavere – is very important for me,” he said. “I hope I can have the good feeling that I have now, and that I won’t be just on the podium but will be winning races in the next month.”

Made from hand-rolled carbon tubes, with design input from Ferrari engineers, the second incarnation of Colnago’s top of the range EPS promises plenty. Warren Rossiter of Cycling Plus magazine took a first ride at the recent Eurobike trade show.
The EPS is Colnago’s flagship road machine, and unlike some of the Italian marque’s lesser ranges, it’s still made at the Italian factory. It’s also made in an astonishing 22 different frame sizes, 14 with traditional geometry and eight sloping. This is because it’s constructed using Colnago-specific lugs, developed in conjunction with a team of Ferrari engineers and produced in multiple sizes and shapes from 150 different moulds.
